Petition Update and the Statue in the Middle of the Ocean

I know its been a long time since I last updated you about the petition and the only reason for it is that there is not much of an update to give!

Our PIL is still stuck in court because our venerable judge hasn’t decided what to do with all the 26/11 related PILs. There is nothing we can do but wait and so we wait. Meanwhile, we have a small moral victory in the guidelines the TV channels have had to self-impose.

Today, the famous theatre director and playwright, Rahul DaCunha, brought up an interesting issue on Facebook. He asks, “Is NO ONE furious that they are building a statue in the middle of the ocean, without asking us and with our money?”

I’m furious about this and I’m hoping our collective blood has not yet stopped simmering. I’m hoping to raise the collective voice of all at SmallChange.in against this!

I’ve been told that the statue will cost hundreds of crores. we could better use the funds to upgrade the Police Force or the Coast Guard. We could, I’m sure, suggest a thousand alternatives!

If we start a petition about this, for a PIL against this, will you join me?

Vishal.

  1. Gurpreet Singh Says:

We dont require any more statues

  2. Chari Says:

Couldn’t agree more. It is just madness, well, I can use all the synonyms for madness as well to describe this!!

  3. Abhiram Gurijala Says:

    Hi Vishal

We will join you in this petition.
There is a drought-like situation in the 27 districts of Maharashtra, but the govt. is busy thinking about a monument..shows the vote-bank politics of our leaders.

    -Abhiram

  4. Ruma Says:

    Hi Vishal,

There is no doubt why we should not join you in this petition.
Its time that we come out of the political stunt bubble that we have been living in for so many years. I hope there comes a political party that really loves the country and its people.

  5. Wall Says:

    Vishal,

Affirmative. But please don’t take this up as a mumbai only issue. The damage is much more worse in the UP. - Rahul

  6. Monica Says:

    Hi Vishal,
Couldn’t agree more with you. You are right. It’s a complete waste of taxpayers’ money especially when the country is facing the drought crisis in 177 districts. I am for the petition. Count me in.
    Thank you.

  7. Vishva Says:

I have no idea what statue we are talking about. Can anybody send some link

  8. s Says:

hi sir, go ahead with the petition , we will surely support you.

  9. Sanjay Says:

Yes, will join you in the PIL to stop the statue, as you said there are thousand better uses for the Money to be spent on this project. And in any case once the Statue is up then someday some Vandal will go and abuse it in some manner and we shall have a open reason for rioting.

    WE DONT WANT ANYMORE STATUES………

  10. Debashri Says:

Its just disgusting what the govt. keeps doing. But its even more infuriating when you see that not enough people are ‘angry’. And if you get angry, they actually laugh at you! I posted a link to a related article on to my facebook account, and I haven’t got a single response! With people SO dead, how are we going to deal with these issues? That is my concern.
We forget 7/11, we forget 26/11, we forget the Kargil war, we forget Mayawati’s statues …. we forget everything that is inconvenient to remember and inconvenient to act upon.
I am with you on this, but what are we going to do? Any plans?

  11. Sanket Says:

Yes we will surely join you in the petition & also forward & inform all whom we know. Please start with the petition at the earliest. You are surely making good use of internet for petitions.

  12. Vishal Says:

Absolutely with you on this. It is a shame that we have to make the government realise the importance of fiscal responsibility. Please act on this Vishal, you will have a lot of support.

Also consider other ways to make this cause heard, like a press statement.

I am glad that you are continuing your efforts and hope that you continue to do so.

    Vishal.

  13. PS Says:

    Yes.

  14. Aman Says:

Yes!!! Where is the link to the petition???

  15. Sandip Says:

Just a counterview, I think this need to be seen in broader perspective. As it has mutiple aspects, it is not like money spent, will go into blackhole or will
have ill side-effects. Considering grandness of this plan, it will be good attraction for tourists and can build ecosystem around itself which can generate jobs for many people. It will easily generate good returns financially in long term. For scientific and practical minds, it may seen waste of money but I liked this idea for grandness of it.

for handling draught condition, even if they just concentrate on preventing leaks into the system, whatever money allocated for it should suffice. Two issues can not be connected.

I always envy kind of great mahals, monument in Rajasthan, or even Tajmahal, which are attracting great amount of tourist and created ecosystem around it, though when they were created, many thousand people might have died of hunger and poverty. if you consider Maharashtra, You wont find any big mahals or something which attracts tourist like in Rajasthan, though Marathas ruled for longer period of time but they always were busy with Wars.

Maratha rulers did not leave much, only History of their bravery, to inspire from, for people of Maharashtra. May be monument is for that History, which is inscribed on mind of every Maharashtrian and draws great inspiration from him.

  16. Satish S Says:

    I’m in, I say!
Screw people who only want to erect statues. Even the dead people who are to be immortalized in stone would that money to go elsewhere.

@Sandip Aren’t the many forts in Maharashtra enough to inspire people? I got a lot of it at recent visits to Pratapgad and Raigad.

  17. loretta Says:

    I’m in!!
Who needs more statues!! We have a failed monsoon, depleting forests! farmers committing suicide. we dont need monuments… we need change. We must become the change. Lets join forces and do something together!

  18. Devang Bhatt Says:

Totally not required, especially when two-thirds of Maharashtra is facing a terrible drought and farmers are committing suicide.

The cost of the statue is enough to save lakhs of farmers in this drought year!

  19. Dilip Says:

I am glad to join you.

  20. Khaja Mohammad Says:

    Yes, I will certainly support.
In India there are many pressing issues: like accountability of Government machinery, poor standard of living.
The whole system should get their act together and focus on such issues.

    Cheers!

  21. sam Says:

Sure, Go ahead I am with U. But, Do speed up the thing because these guys only takes time for building bridges over the sea. I paid enough and don’t want to see waste of my money which instead can use for the primary need of the human kind.

  22. Austin Saldanha Says:

Go for it, it’s the need of the hour. No more statues or renaming of cities or streets. India is all that should matter to all of us. I’d say we go a little further to make these chaps accountable for whatever they do in the period of 5 years.

  23. Abhilasha Says:

yes..we r definately in…thr r much more pressing issues that need immediate attention & action…
thanks for taking such initiative again…

  24. Ajay Srivastava Says:

I agree with Sandip’s counterview. In my opinion we should evaluate benefits of this particular statue before rushing in to sign the petition. Though I am not in favour of wasting money in building statues like Mayawati is doing in UP but Sandip has a valid point for this statue.

  25. Mohita Says:

    yes, Me game

  26. Stephen Says:

    Sure, will join !!

  27. Leena Thadani Says:

We definitely do not need any more statues of anybody anywhere in India. Will join you in the petition & also forward & inform everyone I know. Why can’t our politicians come up with better, more productive ideas ?

    Good Luck and Jai Hind.

  28. Rohit krishnan Says:

Go ahead sir.MUMBAI IS WITH YOU!!

  29. Hitesh Sachdev Says:

The hundreds of crores(Rs. 350 Crore to be precise) that will be spent on statue could be instead spent on upgrading of police forces and coast guards, or in construction of hospitals, schools, communtiy centres or even parks which would provide a much needed relief to the over crowded city. Or it could be spent on making the infra structure better. There are yet hundreds of BETTER uses than putting up a statue.
Please lets do something to stop the politicians from misusing our hard earned money.

  30. Yogesh Says:

    Dear Vishal
I appreciate your concern & urge for use of public money in some genuine causes.
To waste huge amount of public money in statues is definitely a no no.

This case is typical, wherein any opposition can challenge the sentiments of all Indians and natives too.
Especially when the statue is of a Great Icon who is & would be an inspiration to generations ahead.
Individually, I feel extremely proud about this incredible personality who sowed the seeds of self respect and Swaraj in our country.
So conceptually I agree for a monument but political, social & economic calculations are too complex nowadays. Hence I do not want to comment on this.

Vishal, I would like to question your small change initiative when there was a unanimous opposition against a large number of statues (worth crores again) of a few political leaders in a particularly larger state in India. This state itself has some very gruelling issues of poverty, unemployment and hence migration to other states. Wastage of that amount is terrible and that too at the cost of poor and hardworking people of that state.
I cant believe you are unaware of this.
Vishal, people like you and Rahul DaCunha get furious only over issues related to your city which is a financial hub and known for blowing up huge amounts everyday/night for the pleasure of few elite.
While I respect your love for your fellow citizens and their hardearned money, I also would like you to be sensitive to more serious and gross misuse of public money in other parts of our country.
Hope my point is well taken and not misconstrued.

By the way I love your mission “small change” , this will definitely make a difference somewhere atleast.

    regards,
    Yogesh

  31. Malik Hafiz Says:

    hi vishal,
i will surely join u in this petition, instead of “I” , i must say WE,
yes we will join this petition, ‘coz our govt. is busy wasting our money in the places whr its just biggest scrap,
instead of spending so much of crores on a monument which doesnt worth anything, the govt shud wake up n see the conditions of the roads, even today with a small amount of rains the our drainage system is so tough nut to crack to this govt. instead of makin an nonsense statue, the govt. shud look into more serious issues

  32. Nagesh Says:

totaly madness.. will support you for this petition

  33. Nandita Ghosh Says:

Yeah, definitely, I am with you…This is absolutely crazy…we are a drought-hit state…and the government’s giving us a 350 crore statue….think of the number of schools we can get in that kind of money, or benefits for the farmers, or even improving basic infrastructure, within the city….I feel absolutely helpless and frustated about this…Yes, Please, let’s do something about this….

  34. nisheeth Says:

    @Sandeep(August 27th, 2009 at 10:03 pm).

Had the mughals and Rajasthan kings spent money on improving technology/warfare techniques, South-Asia would have witnessed its own industrial revolution and Europeans would not have been able to conquer us. That would made for a better India today- even if sans Tajmahal.

There is no dearth of productive projects(like making a university/hospital or refurbishing Dharawi) that government can undertake instead of making the statue. And all of these projects will build an ecosystem around themselves and generate jobs.

DAV schools were started in remembrance of Swami Dayanand Saraswati. Productive projects named after great souls of the region, like Shivaji, Ambedkar, Jyoti ba Phule, Baba Amte etc will be a more apt tribute.

  35. nisheeth Says:

PS: I do support Vishal’s cause.

  36. prabho Says:

Yes please, but don’t connect the two issues. I’d oppose the statue anyway because it will destroy the beauty of the place, much like in Tamil Nadu; not to mention, waste my tax money. They should restore some of his forts instead, and improve tourist facilities around them.

  37. Amit jais Says:

I strongly support your views Vishal !,

Thanks for keeping this spirit going to raise alarms against this sorts of developments !

Meanwhile your concern can be shared for places all over the India !
please nationalize your concern for other places too…we all are standing here for you..
Together we can make a difference and We Will for Sure !

    Good Luck ….

  38. Zuber Says:

    Count me in…

we can surely make use of this money for a lot more development, what we need is better infrastructure and not some statue to stare at :)

  39. Ahmad Pirani Says:

    Count me in too.
This is surely not the way to spend my state’s money.
Instead give it me, I am sure, I will be able to put it to bettter use.

  40. Ravi Desai Says:

    Count me in

  41. Tanvi Jain Says:

It is a brilliant way to protest. I too agree on this thing.

  42. Shweta Shetty Says:

Our country needs much more than mere constructing of statues and changing names of airports and roads….

  43. Sameer Says:

All you guys who think that the govt does’nt have money to support farmers are lies,if they want to help the farmers they will help..money is not a issue..they have tons of it..these politicians and their generations will perish in hell..they just dont want to do nething to do with farmer suicides and all..and regarding shivaji well i say he is one of the most important person who was instrumental in giving india its rich cultural ethnicity and diversity,if he wouldnt have standed upto the mughals then india would have been a muslim nation and if such a statue of his stature is erected then what is the issue of your money going, typical wannabes will be the first to criticise likes of thackerays et al but i say they r no less as it seems that without thinking or giving a thought abt shivaji as a person they r out to hunt him..and who the heck is raul da cunha .wtf does he know abt history and shivaji ..vishal dude i appreciate your music and its commendable the way you went after the media for its pathetic role in 26/11 but i guess u r wrong on this one..good luck and god bless..

  44. dafflin Says:

Give me one example where the statue has made our lives simpler, infact they have created more chaos and riots. I mean its so easy to distrub communal harmony by damaging xyz statue. Its vote politics. I join this petition.

  45. Bhavna Says:

    Hi Vishal,

We all agree with you..Who needs more statues…One gentleman mentioned that it can be made into a tourist attraction. But we all know how bad we Indians are in maintaining are tourist attractions. Out of the 100s and 1000s of beautiful monuments we have only a handful are maintained well like Taj Mahal, Elephanta caves because they are either one of the seven wonders of the world or they are a world heritage site and have grants from foriegn countries..

Go and look at the mahals in Bhuj, check out mahakali caves and u will know what I mean.

We absolutely do not need a statue especially of a great leader like Shivaji…who was the founder of Maharashtra…He would be ashamed of what we have done to his beloved motherland..

Go ahead Vishal u have our support.

  46. Maria Says:

Absolutely with you. Very very sick and tired of paying for statues and the like. Why should ipay for somebody’s statue…when I could put my money to better use. Its high time the govt uses Tax payer’s money with resposibility. Build schools, coleges, hospitals, roads..t.eh list is endless….but no we shall only build statues.. WTF!!!

  47. Shelraj Patel Says:

I do agree…..this is exactly what is needed….go on bro…the next gen is with you……..

  48. Digital Crusader Says:

It’s not the statue that is being built, it’s a monument. Every great city has one. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monument

In that case Statue of Liberty, Eiffel Tower, and Sydney Opera House are all waste. Had been this kind of mentality present at that time when these monuments were being built, we would have been seeing low cost stupid junk structures in those place.

  49. shveta Says:

    Vishal,

Affirmative. But please do not make this a Bombay issue…farmers are dying everywhere, problems are everywhere, mumbai is ours too. please make this petitiion as “from whole of india”

  50. Mohan Says:

    @Digital Crusader

I never knew somebody ever looked like Statue of Liberty, Eiffel Tower, and Sydney Opera House. What we are talking about is an historic icon named “Shivaji”. That will be classified as statue and not monument. I go with what VISHAL believed. It will be waste of our hard earned money.

  51. Chandini D'Silva Says:

    I’m in!

  52. Madhu Says:

Please dont build the statue. Lets use the 350 crores of people’s money to give something back to the people. There are many things which our politicians can and should do with that money:
    1. Make education in government schools world-class
    2. Provide computers to all government schools
    3. Give training and better salaries to teachers in government schools
    4. Provide some funds for our dying farmers, infact why dont we use this money to pardon some of the loans they have taken. In better times, these are the people who grow food for us.
    5. Improve the security of Mumbai
    6. Provide state of the art weapons to our police and security forces
    7. Provide better salaries to them so that corruption is reduced
    8. Improve the roads and public transport of the city
    9. Provide sanitation to the poort for the city and the state
    10. Use this money to make Mumbai truly world class rather than merely talking about making Mumbai like Shanghai or Singapore
    11. Provide better security for women in the city

I can go on and on .. but are the politicians also reading this? Probably not!! I dont understand how building a statue of the Great Shivaji Maharaj can win public opinion for these politicians. Can’t they understand a simple thing that only if they provide better lives to the common man in Mumbai, Maharashtra and India will they be assured of be elected again? I wish these politicians were in politics for serving the people .. I wish!

  53. simin Says:

hi, why not get a group on facebook going.
    can the petition be signed?

  54. Saurabh R Says:

    Hi Vishal
A notable idea but the fact that you are choosing this issue only raises some suspicions. I suggest some other PILS
    A) inquiry into the lease agreements signed by the Government favoring the clubs based in South and Central Mumbai; these clubs get to use the land for a pittance and charge a ton for their services. Cant the government sell this land at market prices - Imagine the amount that can be raised and used for dying farmers, infrastructure projects etc.
    b) PIL to prevent renegotiation of the lease signed by the RWTCA (race course) for the vast expanse of land in Central Mumbai. As above the land is heavily subsidized, Jockey restaurant relies on illegalities to expand their business and pittiance is paid to the government. Instead of auctioning this land off; a central Park like the one they have in NYC can be created. This park could be the property for all Mumbaikars. The race course is capable enough to buy property outside Mumbai for the course. Least of all the lease negotiated to reflect the market prices.

The fact that you do not speak about these probably raises suspicions that you and your friends are probably patrons of many of these institutions.

Instead of challenging Rs 350 crores allocation on the statue; one must demand a fesibility study. What will be the entrance charges for the entry; how will the auctioning of water transport route be carried out; what will be the revenues from the project. Once this analysis is done it might well happen that this project pays itself after 5-6 years; Statue of Liberty, Eiffel Tower also run on the same parameters and are earns crores of Tourist dollars. If this project is executed well - it will be a money earner.

In my opinion this petition is nothing but a poor attempt to garner attention.

    Regards

  55. Dips Says:

this stupid fellows simply does not understand the situation from which our india is going throught. Everyone is planning to build their own money out of the statue.

Please donate thatmuch of amount to Farmer or poor people in india or invest in education of poor people.

  56. I A Khan Says:

We have enough of statues all over, stop wasting our hard earned money on things which are not necessary. It will be in the interest of the people that more grave issues are resolved with this huge amount of money like, power, agriculture, infra structure, education etc.

Political parties should stop being selfish in wooing the voters with such publicity.

  57. Ashwin Says:

They all here just to make money out of the statue. They are just using historical figures to fill there coffers.I think Sivaji would have been happy if farmers in state would not commit suicide. This money can be use to much better use, instead of building and naming roads if only this politicians followed his policy of welfare of people.

  58. Joel Fernandes Says:

    Count me in!!!
Jo Statue hain, use dhone ke liye time nahi hai!!!
how much More Shivaji Memorabilia does the State Govt. want??
The only thing left now is to officially rename this city, “ShivajiSthanak or ShivajiNagar” os something of that sort….
If u don’t wanna give the money to those who r in desperate need of it, atleast don’t spend it so thoughtlessly… Balance of Payment Crisis sort out karo yaar!!!!

Lots of Options Govt. Bhailog, kabhi milo, discuss karenge!!

  59. pratima Says:

    I support your petition.

  60. Zankhana Katira Says:

i definitely support your petition, if they really have access money they can forward it to the farmers or else utilise it in a better manner, then wasting it in erecting statues. atleast they can make use of tax payers money for making better roads and infrastructure for the common man

  61. jade Says:

    I’m in.

  62. Fredricks Andrade Says:

I totally agree on this unwanted usage of public funds; we still have the time to build monuments & make Mumbai a place of attraction. There was a huge sum spent on building the Sea Link; lets not divide tourist attention from that marvellous engineering it is good for another 5 - 10 years. Just take a back seat on this project; build some industries where people can take home their daily wages just like our neighbour CHINA we have a lot of manpower wasted; PEOPLE are getting into illegal activites underdeveloped people can go to work 8 hours & come back to their families not jails.

  63. patel Says:

Rs 350 core. what is the government doing. they should rather spend this money to upgrade to provide better electricity supply instead of power cuts daily in almost whole of maharastra. Better roads could be also an option. It is just another way for corruptted politicians and builders to fetch in some more money.

  64. Amit Mehra Says:

    A very nice move vishal.
I am in too with u.
Keep up all the good work :)

Also, i believe there should be some kind of public e-forums set up by government to get the approval of public though e-votes and public views about government projects and working. And we the tax payers and voters have to push this up with government.

  65. Neha D Modi Says:

Well, I think there should be petition against Court itself for not giving /considering judgement on previous PIL till date !

Yes, this country can do without statues..Looks like 26/11 has not been eye opener for many ppl.. sad.

  66. Judith Lewis Says:

IF the politicians want a statue, let them contribute from their own pockets, but they can cheat there also. The huge amount of money can be used for the betterment of malnourished children.

  67. Gopi Naidu Says:

Vishal, I am with you. Will support in all possible ways. Go ahead……..

  68. Vinod Subramony Says:

This is a serious matter!! How can somebody use up our own money without even asking us? Have the politicians being elected by us for building statues or for building the nation? As Judith said, let them contribute from their own pocket for building the statues but even before spoiling the nature, let them explain to the whole nation or for that matter the whole world, the importance of building the statue in the sea and disturbing the nature and its purity.

Your initiative is much appreciated, Vishal!!

Come on India, help Vishal to stop this Nonsense!!

  69. Shaan Says:

I think the 350 crore should be used for brain transplant of these guys !!!!
What are they thinking wasting money of tax payers. God only knows when they will start thinking for benifit of common man !!!

  70. Pramod Says:

    I am with you.

  71. Ipsita Says:

Sure. I was wondering how the government came up with this audacious idea especially in a city which is so acutely short of infrustructural facilities yet brimming with filth, slums and thousands of homeless people. Can it get more ironic?

  72. vishakha Says:

THE GOVT WANTS TO BLOW PUBLIC MONEY ON AN UNWORTHY CAUSE INSTEAD OF SPENDING IT LOGICALLY ON MORE IMPORTANT SOCIO-ECONOMIC ISSUES. MOST CITIZENS AND THE MEDIA DON’T EVEN CARE ABOUT IT. THEY’RE ‘OKAY WITH IT’. THIS IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST FLIP-SIDES OF A DEMOCRACY - THAT EVERYBODY ADOPTS THE ‘CHALTA-HAI’ ATTITUDE.

  73. Vatsal Says:

    Im in..

  74. Neha Says:

    Hi,

got to hear abt this petition on Mid-day… read horrible comments on the article too… not suprised to see typical MNS fans posting crap on board… I so agree with you but at the same time am not sure how far this can help as elections are around the corner… Worth a try….

  75. GA Says:

    To The Government of India:

We completely agree with Vishal’s point of view. This is people’s money and should be used for us to further develop and protect us.

This year is a difficult year with a drought hitting us and all of us are going to face trouble in coming times.

We have voted for this Govt. therefore the Govt. has to make a sensible decision and used our money in right places and not building monuments.

Our City and our Country requires better protection and security (we fear for our life each day before we leave our homes not knowing whether we will be able to see our loved one again), Better Equipped Forces (Defense), provisions for the poor, education to children, funds for farmers, Improve the Roads, Infrastructure and Public Transport (we are going through hell everyday), …… the list goes on.

We already have statues and holidays, i dont think we should be doing anything more than this.

    Thanks..

  76. Anita Rane Says:

Count me in. They take our money and all they give us a statue in the middle of the sea x-(

  77. Anisha Thomas Says:

I’m in too. How dare they do something like this, without asking us. This huge amount could be used for so many other things. What are they thinking??

  78. Punit Gandhi Says:

    Vishal

The issue is a bit more complicated than a mere statue. Although i agree with you that 350 crores is a big amount and can be put to immediate use to provide relief to drought hit areas etc. And what is worse, the government is planning to take 300 crores out of the 350 from our Quota of the Planning Commission funds provided for by the center!!! Funds that are supposed to be used for the development of civic amenities etc!!!

On the other hand, i also see the statue as an Investment Opportunity, wherein, IF handled and maintained properly, it would be able to generate a LOT of funds which would add to the state’s exchequer every year (for posterity) and these funds could in turn be used for the betterment of the people.

What i suggest is this, the funds for the statue should not come from public money, or specifically from the plan funds, but should be either generated through a Public-Private partnership or should be outright borrowed from Financial Institutions

If they are generated through a PPP, then the Private enterprise will make sure that the project is feasible and profitable enough for them to pay the Government a fixed amount every year

If the funds come through Financial Institutions then the Government would be forced to carefully create a Project report as to how it plans to pay back the loan and still manage to stay in business

Besides this, any money the government generates from the Statue should go into a separate fund which would be used exclusively for development of the infrastructure in the city, especially Public Mass Transport Systems, like skybus or a water transport system (do you realize, the BOMBAY is perhaps the only major coastal city in the world that does not have an Mass Water Transport System in place, i mean if they can do it in HK and Sydney, why not here!!) The government by law will not be allowed to divert these funds for any other purpose

Also, this obsession with Shivaji is quite absurd, it almost like our great state has not produced any other great leaders. They have forgotten Tilak and the likes!!

    Just a thought

By the way, I am with you in opposing the project in its current form. We need to force them to completely change the focus and direction of the project

    Cheers

  79. Yogesh Bhalerao Says:

Respect and honour the leaders but with your own money, let tax payers money go for causes which need it most.
What do we tell the farmers - u may be dying of drought but be happy that Shivaji statue is built, what do we tell the family of dead during 26/11 — we cudnt protect your loved ones and least likely to protect you too but find solace in the statue, we cant prevent you from dying due to swine flu - but rest assured the statue is built, you cant meet ends meet or feed your family - but we will come to your rescue as soon as the statue is built, you have lost job due to recession - no worries we wont retrain you - but since you are free you should admire the statue, you cant identify an alphabet due to lack of schools - atleast now you can identify the statue from Marine drive.

    Leaders wake up!

  80. Shumon Says:

Tribute to the great personality can be paid in various ways and not necessarily by doing such dumb grandeos… moreover it’s not a paltry amount that is proposed to be spent! 350 crores! I wonder which bird-brained politicos idea it is… or is ts a bunch of them??

Spend the money in making lives of the police force more comfortable.. they live pitiful lives under even more pitiful conditions… build schools exclusively for their children.. give them everything for them to be healthy and dedicated enough to fight the criminals… give them weapons.. there are so many things that can be done with this money…why a statue?

  81. Ajay Says:

I believe there are enough statues of Shivaji in Mumbai. I dont belive there is adequate Public Transportation, healthecare, educatio and housing!

  82. Saji Says:

People in mumbai was a bigger problem! getting affordable housing. I think once we have surpluse amount after solving the basic needs of the people like housing etc,.. we can build not one but hundred statues. But first please give us our basic needs, my dear leaders

  83. Venkataraman Says:

    Hi Vishal,

I would like to join in this petition. Really glad to see things moving.. atleast people have now started taking cognizance of what’s happening with their money…. I want my taxes to be utilized for the benefit of the people and not to create a scrap in the middle of the ocean.

    Regards

    Venkataraman N

  84. MIlind Bhagwat Says:

This is nothing but another ploy from current generation of politicians to have a GRAZING FIELD for themselves and generations to come. If they go on with this project that is estimated at Rs 350 crores, by the time it finishes, they will end up spending more than Rs.1000 cores on it. A majority of this money would end up in pockets of various individuals. After commissioning, they will pass budget allowing for huge sums every year for maintenance, which again will find its way in pockets of future generation politicians.

It is amazing to see how all political parties come to consensus on issues like this. If they show a fraction of this understanding while dealing with other social issues, India will be a stronger country in coming years.

  85. Smitha Says:

absolutely! it’s high time we stood out against the idiocy of the government.

  86. Jai "Zaiu" Ranjit Says:

I honestly don’t see the point of glorifying any person more than required. Perhaps after ten years they might want to, and that would be fine, but now? I mean for the sake of sanity, why not invest those Rs.300 crore in our police, infrastructure or hospitals?? What about emergency services?

Political parties need to be given one tight slap, pardon my French. Their job is to form and run governments, not erect statues and waste public funding.

I would really love to meet the men and women who came up with this idea, just to personally congratulate them on establishing absolutely brilliant new lows of human decency and highs of simple idiocy.

If petitions get that done, I’m more than willing.

  87. Aditya Says:

yes, i’m in. use the money to clean up the city! or improve the roads! *anything* but yet another eye-sore!

  88. Pankaj Says:

Maharashtra Government’s idea of erecting a huge statue of Shivaji overlooking Marine drive prooves only one thing, that our politicians just don’t care about this city. All they want is to use anything that comes their way to increase their vote banks. I was surprised that one of my Maharashtrian friend was actually excited about this. Is it that difficult to see what actually this Government is trying to do? Instead of trying to improve Mumbai’s infrastructure, transportation facilities etc they are spending hundreds of crores on a statue!!! It seems drought, recession etc are only for us commoners and not for our privileged government.

I totally oppose this action and extend my full support to Vishal’s petition. Time to show these blind politicians, ‘Enough is Enough’

  89. Sandeep Says:

I swear I am in and we all are with you Vishal.. Please lets take this matter further..and lets stop them using our hard earned money like this..

    Please.

  90. Abhilash Says:

Definitely Vishal, I would join you in this petition. This kind of totally useless spending is not required when the country is fighting against drought, Inflation, Terrorism.

  91. Venugopal Rao Says:

    Hi Vishal,

Mi Mumbaikar… I’am in. I too believe its a waste of public money. Instead, they can use this funds to make Mumbai a better living place. Improving the infrastructure and the basic civic amenities.

I’am with you in opposing the builidng of this structure.

    Cheers

  92. The Sceptic Says:

This petition is doomed if only “South Mumbaikars” vote for it. I use the term “south mumbaikars” in the broadest sense possible, to mean the educated elite.

The real challenge must come from the supposed targets of this stupidity - the Marathi manoos - especially the RURAL manoos. He must understand that the government is wasting money that could go towards easing his life in this difficult year. Till then, you/we can all waste our time blogging away, the government will do it AND reap the intended benefits.

  93. Rohit Bhatia Says:

    Statue/Plaque tokenism must stop.

  94. Avesh Patel Says:

Hey we want better school, colleges, Hospitals with our hard earned money. We dont want statue in the sea.

  95. Neha Says:

I believe that the use of Public Funds should be allocated for the benefits provided to the society at large. We still need a lot of amenities to upgrade our existing system rather than spend outlandish amounts on Statues / plaques. I am for the petion to support that No statues should be built

  96. Vinita Says:

I support the petition against the building of statues .

  97. Prasad Dumbre Says:

Guys, the u r discussing is not like any other common statue. It is the statue of our “gr8 emperor Shivaji Maharaj”. And it is going to be comparable to statue of liberty. “Some things r more important than money & pride of maharashtra & our people is more important than anything”. So guys, plz dn’t make hurdles in the way of statue bcoz 90% population of whole maharashtra is on the side this statue. “Statue would definitely be there”.

  98. Prasad Dumbre Says:

Shiv Smarak will bring cash inflows to the state through tourists … also it will give Mumbai its much needed icon associated with its culture unlike the Gateway which was built by the British ..

  99. jm Says:

How To File PIL In India
Should read through this and distinguish between a petition and a PIL.

These days in India, the only way to get things done is to file PILs. Here is how to do it:
    1. How can I file a PIL?

PIL is filed in the same manner, as a writ petition is filed. If a PIL is filed in a High Court, then two (2) copies of the petition have to be filed (for Supreme Court, then (4+1=5 sets) Also, an advance copy of the petition has to be served on the each respondent, i.e. opposite party, and this proof of service has to be affixed on the petition.

    The Procedure:

A Court fee of Rs. 50, per respondent (i.e. for each number of party, court fees of Rs 50) has to be affixed on the petition. Proceedings, in the PIL commence and carry on in the same manner, as other cases. However, in between the proceedings if the Judge feels that he may appoint the commissioner, to inspect allegations like pollution being caused, trees being cut, sewer problems, etc. After filing of replies, by opposite party, or rejoinder by the petitioner, final hearing takes place, and the judge gives his final decision.

    2. In which cases, can a PIL be filed?

PIL can be filed only in a case where “Public Interest” at large is affected. Merely because, only one person is effected by state inaction is not a reason for PIL.

There are some of the possible areas where PIL can be filed.

    · Where a factory/ industry unit is causing air pollution, and people nearly are getting effected.
    · Where, in an area/ street there are no street lights, causing inconvenience to commuters.
    · Where some “Banquet Hall” plays a loud music, in night causing noise pollution.
    · Where some construction company is cutting down trees, causing environmental pollution.
    · Where poor people, are affected, because of state government’s arbitrary decision to impose heavy “Tax”.
    · For directing the police/ Jail authorities to take appropriate decisions in regards to jail reforms, such as segregation of convicts, delay in trial, before the court on remand dates.
    · For abolishing child labor, and bonded labor.
    · Where rights of working women are affected by sexual harassment.
    · For keeping a check on corruption and crime involving holders of high political officer.
    · For maintaining Roads, Sewer etc in good condition.
    · For removal of Big Hoarding and signboards from the busy road to avoid traffic problem.

    3. Who can file the PIL?

Earlier it was only a person whose interest was directly affected along with others, whereby his fundamental right is affected who used to file such litigation. Now, the trend has changed, and, any Public-spirited person can file a case (PIL) on behalf of a group of person, whose rights are affected. It is not necessary, that person filing a case should have a direct interest in this PIL.

e.g. a person in Mumbai can file a PIL for, some labor workers being exploited in Madhya Pradesh or as someone filed a PIL in supreme court for taking action against a Cracker factory in Sivakasi Tamilnadu, for employing child labor or the case where a standing practicing lawyer filed a PIL for release of 80 under trials in a jail, than the period prescribed as punishment for offence, for which they were tried. It is clear that, any person can file a PIL on behalf of group of affected people. However, it will depend on every facts of case, whether it should be allowed or not.
    4. Against whom a PIL can be filed?

A PIL can be filed against a State/ Central Govt., Municipal Authorities, and not any private party. However, “Private party” can be included in the PIL as “Respondent”, after making concerned state authority, a party. For example- if there is a Private factory in Delhi, which is causing pollution, then people living nearly or any other person can file a PIL against the Government of Delhi, Pollution Control Board, and against the private factory. However, a PIL cannot be filed against the Private party alone.

    5. Can a Letter Explaining Facts to Chief Justice be treated as a PIL?

In early 90’s there have been instances, where judges have treated a post card containing facts, as a PIL. Many PIL has been filed on this basis in the past. Since, many people have tried to misuse the privilege of PIL, the court has required a detailed narration of facts and complaint, and then decide whether to issue notice and call the opposite party. However, as there is no statute laying down rules and regulations for a PIL still the court can treat a letter as a PIL. However, the letter should bring the true and clear facts, and if the matter is really an urgent one, the court can treat it as a PIL. Even a writ petition filed by the aggrieved person, whether on behalf of group or together with group can be treated as a PIL.

    6. What are the various reliefs available by PIL?

There are many kinds of remedies, which can be given in a PIL, to secure the public interest, at large. They are:

    · The court can afford an early interim measure to protect the public interest,
    · The court may appoint a committee, or commissioner to look into the matter and
    · The court may also give final orders by way of direction to comply within a stipulated time.

  100. kajal Says:

thanks vishal…its high time we understand how these small changes will help us value the cost of a life.

  101. Uttara Says:

Really…its high time we did something about these ridiculous whims and fancies of our dear dear useless politicians

  102. Deepa Venkatraman Says:

Of course Vishal! We’re all up to stand by your side against what’s evidently wrong. We’ve submitted too much power in the hands of those who apparently don’t know what to do with it….but waste it away under the name of paying tribute to a leader who has quite been well recognized. Its time we take some of that power back.

Besides, this really isn’t all about the money being spent. There are several environmental aspect about building a man-made island in the sea with respect to the marine life et al that citizens like Mr. Prasad Dumbre seem to overlook. This project is obviously too high a price to pay even if it is to honor one of our great leaders. Im quite sure Shivaji Maharaj would not quite like this too much either….

  103. rekha murty Says:

It’s absurd that the Marathi Manoos should be denied welfare means at this absurd ongoing cost! Its elementary to state that schools, hospitals, transport etc could do with this funding.

Forts in Maharshtra could do with the funding to commemorate Shivaji and simultaneously promote tourism.

    Am TOTALLY against this statue.

  104. vinayakmhaske Says:

Was Mr vishal Dadlani sleeping when Mayawati raised her statues in UP?
Was Mr. vishal Dadlani sleeping when government installed statues of other leaders in india?
Was Mr. vishal dadlani sleeping when politicians wasteed money in North India for failed railway projects?
was Mr vishal dadlani sleeping when biharis burn train n destroy public property?
was he sleeping when statues of Mahatama gandhi were instaleed in different states?
was he sleeping when statues of Bhagat singh were installed in our country?
was dadlani sleeping at tat time ….
Why dis time dadlani has filed did petion against statue of Shri chatrapati shivaji maharaj ?

  105. vinayakmhaske Says:

WHY HAS VISHAL DADLANI NOT FILED PETTION AGAINST THE GOVERNMENT FOR WAISTING MONEY ON CHANDRAYAAN INSTEAD DEY CUD HAV HELPED POOR FARMERS?

  106. Tushar Says:

Great Job Vinayak Mhaske… Me Maharashtracha !! Maharashtra Maza !! They are coming here as a Indian but they don’t have a right to talk on our culture, our state and our King / God person. Shivaji maharaj is an idol for us and you educate people… how u can listen all this statement from any outsiders. They don’t have any right to discuss on this topic. We welcome them as a Indian but not allow them to interfere in our culture and decision. This decision has been taken by maharashtrian people.I agree with few comments about the farmers. Our govt has already declared loan scheme for them, so don’t worry.. Secondly, some one is said that we are paying tax and this is our money… Hey dude but you have earn this money in our home and if you don’t want to pay tax then go to UP-Bihar, their are several sceme of govt for avoiding tax. ok boss.. you have to right to come and leave in our home, but you don’t have right to dance or giving your decisions. We dont aske you. So do your regular routine only. And tell me guys why were you not formulate any blog when train was staoped and beating many UP-Biharis in bangalore? or when Mayavati goes to make her own statue? etc.. If you think that your this type of activity will stop us then please guys.. As a my indian brother I will always hug you but you will try to do dust in my house then central govt will survive. Shivaji maharaj is a gr8 personality and you are not a dust of their finger. Hey, tushar don’t discuss with them.. the majority of north indian on this blog ani Lakshat thaev mitra “KAVLYACHYA SHAPANE KAHI HOT NAHI” JAI MAHARASHTRA MITRA.. GARAJ ASEL TEVHA HAAK MAAR ME YETO…

  107. Neil Says:

Regarding Sandip’s view: If the Marathas left nothing but just stories of their bravery, then so be it! No need to errect statues by spending crores of people’s money to satisfy the political ambitions of a handful of greedy morons, who’s followers are nothing but a bunch of wasters, who do nothing but wait for the opportunity to loot & pillage at the drop of a hat.

  108. deepak pathania Says:

i was against it conceptually but after reading many comments, against and some for the statue…my thoughts follow

350 crores dont get spent in a day…it would eventually take about 8-10 years for something like this to be completed. realistically the budget WILL go up while being built (like it always does)….suppose it does to 500crores. it means about 50crores a year…i personally think spending that for, like some are saying, for the pride of the state, seems very logical.

also drought and recession is now and not forever and like someone said that IF done correctly, the venue can even generate huge revenues…through tickets and merchandise..so its an investment that could repay in pride and monetary sense.
being a creative consultant, i would say that they should go a few steps futher. if they build 100 shops/restaurants on the bottom floor of the main structure forming the base, they will be able to raise more than 500 crores from sales of those hugely premium shops even before it is built. and theres no stopping one from making 5 of these kinds of floors including one amphitheatre for open air performances. you never know maybe independence rock in 2020 could be held there (wishful thinking maybe).
and noone should have a problem about culture and association, as strategically, whatever one is doing in that place, chattrapati shivaji reigns supreme towering above you.

so i personally fee that money cant be made the main issue here in the statue of chattrapati shivaji case, if done correctly as it can make more money than its cost. and it is the only construction project that will hopefully not cause much disruption to average daily life.

  109. Neil Says:

Tushar, I ask YOU! Where are you from???? Are you from Bombay or elsewhere in Maharashtra???? If you wnat to get territorial, then please go back to where ever you have come from. If you were from Bombay, as I am, you would cry to see how idiots have ruined the place with their political ambitions & their moronic followers who fall for their communal ploys. And BTW, I dont mean my father or grandfather came & settled in Bombay from elsewhere. We have a documented history of over 600 years of living in Bombay. So when someone says “Amchee Mumbai”, I ask - do you even have the faintest clue of the history of Bombay - how it all began, who were the original dwellers, what Bombay was, what it has become, and so on and so forth! Did you even know that Bombay was itself a state???!!!

  110. Vinayak Kumbhar Says:

    Mr. Vishal,

This is pride of India not only for Maharashtra, you have to be proud on this dream project.Govt is not foolish to spend on such projects, they are thinking professionally , as suggested by Mr. Deepak Pathania , govt can earn monetary returns for any other rehabilitation projects also. So think positively & we are Maharashtrian & proud of it.

  111. Tushar Says:

Dear Neil, I am from Maharashtra. And say Mumabai before bombay. When you don’t know actual name of mumbai and the history behind the name what is the us of your 600 yrs documented history. So 1st say mumabi. And you dont have right to tell any marathi manus for go back from mumbai. Mumbai is a part of maharashtra.
Please Note my dear friends who oppose this project:-
our govt is not foolish to develop this project. They are not spending 350 crores in overnight. It will takes around min 8-9 yrs. Also, govt will earn lots of money once this project completed and start full fledge my dear. And why only these outsiders are talking on that when every marathi manus is happy with this decision. For sick of this mentality we are not going ahead in our country, we will never develop our infrastructure bec of ths mentality. And, why this Mr. Vishal was silent when Mayavati build her own statue with govt expenses, why he is keeping silent when most of the share of Indian economy goes to UP & Bihar state for developing infrastructure. But, we know the development level of these states. So, they don’t have right to say anything about our state without knowing our history, pride etc. Before suggest us they should be aware with their state and their problems. We are not interfering their state issues why they are doing this? If they are paying taxes then it’s their duty if they dnt want to do then go back to their state.

As a Indian I will always hug you my brothers but this kind of unnecessary companion will not with you.

  112. Tushar Says:

Guys, the u r discussing is not like any other common statue. It is the statue of our “gr8 emperor Shivaji Maharaj”. And it is going to be comparable to statue of liberty. “Some things r more important than money & pride of maharashtra & our people is more important than anything”. So guys, plz dn’t make hurdles in the way of statue bcoz 90% population of whole maharashtra is on the side this statue. “Statue would definitely be there”.

  113. Mahes S Says:

    Dear All,

After reading all comments need to suggest all of you that Maharashtra govt is not a small children play group.

You should aware with all the project. It cost only 50-60 crores every year and not affecting so much for state. Mr. Vishal & his friends doing only public stunt nothing else.

Also, the state govt will earn a lots of money after completion of this project through MINI THEATER, RESTAURANTS, MUSEUM ETC. .. So, discussion on this topic will create unnecessary gap between us. So, all of we are indian and have to be proud as a Indian. Also, this statue is not a statue of any ordinary person. This is a symbol of Maharashtra emperor and who knows maharashtra & maratha history and who is feel proud to say that we are maharashtrian and salute Marathi Emperor Ch Shivaji Maharaj, they are true maharashtrian and will not oppose this project. Only few people are there who are opposing this project for public stunt and popularity in bollywood and social life nothing else. So, my friends before giving any comment on this blog go through all project and positive points of project.

  114. amol Says:

    No, Certainly not…
I totally disagree with you. This is the Pride of Maharashtra and India in world. No one is asking any question about all the corruption and and all other things which are going all over. This amount is toooooo small. Just check the cost of electricity which is spending only in Mumbai for banners and hording of advertisement. The cost of lands on which illegal buildings and slum is taken place. WE are ready to spend the cost for OUR KING This is our pride. Like Statue of Liberty, this will a miracle for India. Thanks

  115. Mahes S Says:

    Thanks Amol for your comment.

  116. Hitesh Says:

I Too Totally Disagree with your view point. I am not marathi speaking , but maharashtrian by birth and four generation have been here. I definitely feel a Statue is needed for the icon of maharashtra, as WE MAHARASHTRIAN have seen him.

I Always wonder , when there is something to be done in Maharashtra , people start their Band Wagon Opposing them! How many opposition and petition did you file Mr.Vishal when Mayawati was building a memorial of her own worth Rs. 500 crores?

Again , I would ask you how many petition have you filed for the bad conditions of the road of mumbai?

Again i would ask you how many petition have you filed for poor infrastructure for a common man of mumbai?

And Regarding your so called savings of Tax money as an ideal citizen , can i ask you how many transactions have YOU done faithfully in pure White amount to avoid Tax on Income.

Well , Vishal , when it comes to pointing , i feel you should set your house straight first. Your so called Small Change Wala Blog also comes in a time, when u are in least attention. How can we not say that this is your mere publicity stunt to attract attentions and media ?

With Lame Argument in your published petition only portrays that this is just your stunt to seek attention of mass public.

The Quality of YOUR BLOG reflects the seriousness of the issue in your heart. Some Fly by Night Idea .

I heard a very good person say ” To get famous , Slap someone who is famous” that is precisely , what you are trying to achieve.

So, Please Stop this hocus pocus , Accept YOUR Income only in YOUR name and that too in 100% white amount and Pay your dues to the government like a good Samaritan.

Were You Sleeping when Mayawati Swiped 500 crores of the account of Central? Why is it that only when a maharashtrian wants something to be done for his idols , you people wake up?

  117. Hitesh Says:

Just going through all the comments and just wondering all the oppositions and cribbing over tax money being spend wrongly comes from all those who know very little about Shivaji and his Greatness. As Always ….

  118. Hitesh Says:

People with the likes of Vishal and Similar tribes will not understand anything about the history of Shivaji. Guys, the Education board esp ICSE and CBSE have just awarded some pages on Shivaji ..and written sagas of Akbar and Babar and Humayun.

Just Adding One Line ” With due Respect to Shivaji” ( which i know ..he does not hold any , in his heart) and then cribbing about how his tax money is wasted only points that anything related to the Iconic hero is Waste of money. That is what he actually thinks !!!

I think your petition will be used as a “Toilet Paper”, vishal , as it only brings out your personal motives to seek attention. If you had been really concerned about proper utilisation of your tax money , you would have questioned this long back for efficient roads, efficient transportation , efficient security, efficient governance , efficient health care system , FOR which Fund is allocated , but not properly utilised,.Of all the issues , you choosed this one , to only satisfy your hunger of attention.

  119. Hussain Abbas Says:

what a waste of money am with you VISHAL.

  120. Varun Gawarikar Says:

Err, the proposed site is not just a statue. Its a huge project involving museums, aquariums, malls (don’t you all just love them) and lots more where bourgeoisie classes and proletariat classes can chill out and enjoy at lesser expenses.

This petition is nothing but publicity stunt for whatsoever reason. This is like asking BMC’s decision to keep colaba roads clean and asking affluent pet owners to clean up after their pets ‘why don’t you do something about humans who squat everywhere first.

I am against this not required petition.

  121. Riddhi Parekh Says:

I agree, This statue is a total waste of money. They are building this in the name of giving Mumbai a tourist destination to increase revenue but I belive there are more than enough reasons to come to Mumbai. Its over crowded anyways. I think what Mumbai needs is a better infrastucture and thats what are hard earned money should be invested in.

    I am against this petition.

  122. RN Says:

I agree fully on this. firstly u dnt maintain the monuments already existing and actually related to him and then spend waste of money on such a thing. Ask them to go check the despair state of Raigad Fort, Pratapgarh Fort etc. Shivaji was coronated as King @ Raigad and see it halat today u will feel ashamed.

  123. Prashant Says:

    Hi Vishal,

Your efforts are appreciated but what’s wrong with statue of a great hero whose contribution to our country is so much larger and still relevant. I am no fanatic M** party worker (infact I am a north Indian) but like countless other Indians, I have great respect for Shivaji.

Suggestion to channel this money in something constructive is also welcome but what about thousands of crores disappearing in daylight scams or when corrupt politicians are abusing power and mindlessly building their own statues. Lets first go after them instead.

  124. Mahaveer Patwari Says:

It is nice to know people are aware and would like to be part ofthe development arround their habitat. But instead of objecting on such minor issues, we should take up more major issues relating to the state then on this small issue. Another point is, the government has approved it, and it is for the better ment of Mumbai, so let it be, take up issues relating to the infrastructure of the city.
This being a very sensitive topic, we should not indulge to agravate the delicate social structure.

  125. SAMEER Says:

    LOVE COUNTRY HATE POLITICIANS

Vishal u r true warrior!!! Our all Indian kings from Aryans to Mughals and all in respect they also don’t create their own statue. Then why our politicians want, Politician have do that things that they done in their Golden time. Clean our country with corruption, Give people jobs by constructions they done their best to make their people happy. We have many issues like Power Electricity, I m from Maharashtrian family located in metro Mumbai city and we are facing 4hour Load Shading so think about our small villages in MAHARASHTRA. Build a Statue of anyone is Idiotism. We hate British for they rule on us, but the Fact is Still we are using The Local Train and Drainage System what they build in India. You politicians cant maintain that thing forget about to build anything, You people cant solve the problem of people dying by traveling in Mumbai fully crowded Local train for their jobs and for their family. Another issues about our Police not but mostly is seen, if somewhere people are fighting and our Police wala is busy in taking money from our WadaPao Wala and Sandwich Wala Thela. Mr. Politicians you have so many thing to do. Build administration in country, We need the right usage our tax money its our money not your what you are putting in Swiss Bank.

  126. SAMEER Says:

    JAI-HIND

  127. naveen Says:

BOSS OUR ALL KINGS ARE OUR PAST. YOU KNOW WHAT OUR PROBLEM IS THIS WE ALWAYS IN PAST. THINK ABOUT FUTURE. IN HISTORY OF INDIA IF ANYBODY IS THERE FOR STATUES IS THE ONE AND ONLY (MR.ABDUL KALAM). WHO STAND OUR COUNTRY IN A UNIQUE PLACE. THINK GUYS BEFORE VOTE. I WANT A LAW IN INDIA THAT POLITICIAN HAVE ATLEAST MASTER DIGREEE TO STAND IN ELECTION OR FOR OUR NATION.

  128. RAJESH Says:

i agreed about you who against the statue.
    RDBT.

  129. narendra Says:

you all are idiots. uoy people dont know about Shivaji. Because of shivaji we living Hindu. otherwise all our hindu brother converted in to cristianity or islam or Jewish. and you b^&** people thinking about money

  130. Brijesh Joshi Says:

I totally disagree with Narendra becoz if statue will remind for hinduism then what about other religion what abt there respect No one can force u to be in other religon india is a democratic country. U will decide that in which religion u want be ok dont say that becoz of shivaji u r Hindu & yes i will agree to Naveen’s last statment that ther should be,

1} A LAW IN INDIA THAT POLITICIAN HAVE ATLEAST MASTER DIGREEE TO STAND IN ELECTION OR FOR OUR NATION.

2} Sameer what u said that Police wala is busy in taking money from our WadaPao Wala and Sandwich Wala Thela there must be reason behind that Y they are doing Hafta Vasuli from those Small people. or it could also be because of there salaray.

  131. Ninad Raut Says:

Dear Blogger, first thing what mumbai needs is some beatification and cleanliness. Ppl are coming here (locals or non locals) are creating illegal stuctures and doing business illegally, squatting, spitting encroaching public land. Plzz write a petition in high court for that, because I as a tax payer cannot see my public places and footpaths used for illegal activities. I would like my kids to have gardens and open grounds to play and grow, not slums.

As far as statue is concerned it will add to the beauty of mumbai, will bring in money to the city through tourism. Will help project a good picture to the outside world about indians.

The Monument will breed curiosity in the future generation to learn about the Great leader and his “Charitra.” Mumbai needs some thing to be proud of., the Monument will help it.

  132. Ramit Says:

I’ll join you bhai, sure. But tell me, since when did the american petition law come to India?

  133. Maruti Says:

    My dear Compatriots,
I take this opportunity to tell you something about Shivaji Maharaj, the real hero of modern India. Because, I assume that you might not know about Shivaji Maharaj, in a hurry to sign up, you might miss to know about Shivaji Maharaj or you might have nothing to do with who Shivaji Maharaj was, but to oppose the project.

Therefore, I urge all of you to spare some minutes to read it. After all, it is necessary today. Then, I would certainly share my views on the project.

Shivaji Maharaj may be the only king in India to have been so venerated and celebrated even today. I may be wrong, but I do not see any other State in India doing so much for its respective king in today’s times. Even youths of this young generation like me in Maharashtra have fallen in love with this king. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s personality and message are as relevant today as they were in the past. Have you ever tried to know what extraordinary qualities did Shivaji Maharaj possess? In answer to this question, I will put quotes of some contemporary historians and eminent personalities later.

In the time when India was harassed by different enemies like Adilshah, Nijamshah, Kutubhshah and Mughals, when the people suffered a lot and when our mothers and sisters screamed for help, when kings from north to the south chose to keep quiet and be subservient to these mighty enemies, Shivaji Maharaj determined to fight these evils and release the people from the shackles of these cruel enemies. He dreamt of Independence and a state for the sons of the soil (Hindavi Swarajya) 350 years ago. He defied the authority of these Muslim kings and tried to unite people for a common cause.

His Kingdom was small compared to the Mughal Empire, but it was made by ‘our’ people, it was for ‘our’ people, it was ‘made in India’. It had all the elements of a democratic state. Even after deliberate attempts, historians could not find even one instance of corruption under his regime.

With his inspiration, later, the Marathas fought bravely and saved the country from being completely trampled under the feet of the Muslim rulers. All historians agree that had not been there the Maratha power, our country would have been a state like Pakistan.
Today, the armies of different countries study his guerilla tactics. The then President of Vietnam after defeating US said that they were inspired by King Shivaji and his guerilla tactics. You can even see a statue of Shivaji Maharaj in the Capital of Vietnam, Ho Chi Min.
    Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru said :
” Shivaji did not belong to Maharashtra alone; he belonged to the whole Indian nation.
Shivaji was not an ambitious ruler anxious to establish a kingdom for himself but a patriot inspired by a vision and political ideas derived from the teachings of the ancient philosophers. He studied the merits and faults of the systems of administration in kingdoms existing at the time and determined his own policies and administration in the light of that knowledge.
A devout Hindu, he was tolerant of other religions and established a number of endowments for maintainig sacred places belonging to them. As a general he was undoubtedly one of the greatest in Indian history; he saw the need for and raised a navy to guard his coastline and to fight against the British and the Dutch. Pratapgad Fort build in 1656 stands today as a monument to his military genius.
Shri Shivaji is a symbol of many virtues, more especially of love of country.”
A.B. de Braganca Pereira says in “Arquivo Portugues Oriental, Vol III”:
“Wonderous mystic, adventurous and intrepid, fortunate, roving prince, with lovely and magnetic eyes, pleasing countenance, winsome and polite, magnanimous to fallen foe like Alexander, keen and a sharp intellect, quick in decision, ambitious conqueror like Julius Caesar, given to action, resolute and strict disciplinarian, expert strategist, far-sighted and constructive statesman, brilliant organizer, who sagaciously countered his political rivals and antagonists like the Mughals, Turks of Bijapur, the Portuguese, the English, the Dutch, and the French. Undaunted by the mighty Moghuls, then the greatest power in Asia. He fought with Bijapuri to carve out a great empire.”
    D. Kincaid says in “The Grand Rebel”:
“In spite of the character of a crusade which Ramdas’s blessings gave to Shivaji’s long struggle, it is remarkable how little religious animosity or intolerance Shivaji displayed. His kindness to Catholic priests is an agreeable contrast to the proscriptions of the Hindu priesthood in the Indian and Maratha territories of the Portuguese. Even his enemies remarked on his extreme respect for Mussulman priests, for mosques and for the koran. The Muslim historian Khafi Khan, who cannot mention Shivaji in his cronicle without adding epithets of vulgar abuse, nevertheless acknowledges that Shivaji never entered a conquered town without taking measures to safeguard the mosques from damage. Whenever a koran came to his possession, he treated it with the same respect as if it had been one of the sacred works of his own faith. Whenever his men captured Mussulman ladies, they were brought to Shivaji, who looked after them as if they were his wards till he could return them to their relations.”
Cosme da Guarda says in “Life of the Celebrated Sevaji”:
“Such was the good treatment Shivaji accorded to people and such was the honesty with which he observed the capitulations that none looked upon him without a feeling of love and confidence. By his people he was exceedingly loved. Both in matters of reward and punishment he was so impartial that while he lived he made no exception for any person; no merit was left unrewarded, no offence went unpunished; and this he did with so much care and attention that he specially charged his governors to inform him in writing of the conduct of his soldiers, mentioning in particular those who had distinguished themselves, and he would at once order their promotion, either in rank or in pay, according to their merit. He was naturally loved by all men of valor and good conduct.”
    Indira Gandhi said:
“I think Shivaji ranks among the greatest men of the world. Since we were a slave country, our great men have been somewhat played down in world history. Had the same person been born in a European country, he would have been praised to the skies and known everywhere. It would have been said that he had illumined the world.”
    The poet Bhushan
(As forest-fire is to the forest trees, a leopard to the deer-herds and a lion to the stately elephants; as the sun is to the darkness of the night, as Krishna was to Kansa, so was king Sivaji, a lion, towards the hordes of Mlechchas.)
    Swami Vivekananda
“Shivaji was the greatest Hindu king that India had produced within the last thousand years; one who was the very incarnation of Siva, about whom prophecies were given out long before he was born; and his advent was eagerly expected by all the great souls and saints of Maharashtra as the deliverer of the Hindus from the hands of the Mlechchas and one who succeeded in the establishment of the Dharma which had been trampled under foot by the depredations of the devastating hordes of the Moghals. This may not come in your reading Indian History written by foreigners who could have no sympathy with you, nor could they have any respect for your culture, traditions, manners and customs which they could not understand. Is there a greater hero, a greater saint, a greater bhakta and a greater king than Sivaji? Sivaji was the very embodiment of a born ruler of men as typified in your great Epics. He was the type of the real son of India representing the true consciousness of the nation. It was he who showed what the future of India is going to be sooner or later, a group of independent units under one umbrella as it were, i.e., under one supreme imperial suzerainty.”
Many foreign travellers who visited India during Shivaji Maharaj’s time wrote about him.
Abbe Carre was a French traveller who visited India around 1670; his account was published as Voyage des Indes Orienteles mele de plusiers histories curieuses at Paris in 1699. Some quotes:
“Hardly had he won a battle or taken to town in one end of the kingdom than he was at the other extremity causing havoc everywhere and surprising important places. To this quickness of movement he added, like Julius Caesar, a clemency and bounty that won him the hearts of those his arms had worsted.” “In his courage and rapidity he does not ill resemble the king of Sweden, Gustavus Adolphus.”
The French traveller Francois Bernier wrote in his Travels in Mughal India:
“I forgot to mention that during pillage of Sourate, Seva-ji, the Holy Seva-ji! Respected the habitation of the reverend father Ambrose, the Capuchin missionary. ‘The Frankish Padres are good men’, he said ‘and shall not be attacked.’ He spared also the house of a deceased Delale or Gentile broker, of the Dutch, because assured that he had been very charitable while alive.”
Coming back to the 350-crore project, I rarely see any Marathi name in this list. What is the reason? Do you fear that Marathi people will not endorse your campaign?
Sharing my view on this project, I strongly feel that if the Government want to leverage political mileage from this project, it is not good. In fact, many of the forts in Maharashtra are completely neglected and are in dire need of conversation. So the government has even no moral right to speak for the project. But, I will personally justify the project, after all the economical, financial, ecological, environmental and social aspects are properly studied. Because Shivaji Maharaj is a great source of inspiration for us. While looking at the statue, let the world know who this King Shivaji was!

As regard the colossal money, last month I saw on a news channel that one Dinesh Patel had amassed Rs 10 crore in cash in his home. He was a tax defaulter. Police took away the money. Only yesterday again I read that the MP police confiscated Rs 12 crore from one Mittal. He is an industrialist and a tax defaulter too. Our Members of Parliament are staying in 5-star hotels making bills in lacs of Rupees every month. We face corporate scams like that of Satyam involving thousands of crores of Rupees. How many of such tax defaulters, MPs and Fraudsters we need to make 350 crore? And 350 crore is not a big amount for a State like Maharashtra, if the government is sincere and not corrupt.

And please do not mix the development projects and farmers’ suicides with the project of statue of Shivaji Maharaj. There are hundreds of development projects running. Effective implementation and corruption is the problem. There are different reasons for the farmers’ suicides. Each farmer has his own reasons. I am also a son of a farmer from Pune district and our entire land is dependent on rain water. I have not seen any farmer committing suicide in our area or district.
So, I doubt that the people of Maharashtra would support your campaign.
    Regards,
    Maruti

Hey Vishal I appreciate this thought of your’s for the “so called betterment of our society”. But at the same time i find this baseless..yes..because at first place “people face it then forget it”.To just refresh the mind..What happend to all those “movement against terror attack” two day gathering sort of took place at the gateway of India after the Terror attack..there were this huge crowd…all protesting against so called terror attack..What was the outcome?? Ajmal kasab is still breathing freely inside the jail..he wants newspaper to keep him update, wants to hog on non-veg food and what not?? I mean if counted there are hell lot of issues to be faced..but then again..no use..infact u, urself are aware of the fact that “Our PIL is still stuck in court because our venerable judge hasn’t decided what to do with all the 26/11 related PILs. There is nothing we can do but wait and so we wait”.So i suppose u have the answer …We can just WAIT WAIT AND WAIT..as always.

  135. aditi Says:

It is absurd to build a statue at the cost of infrastructure development, roads and housing. We must vote for a governenment which will give us development, not tamasha.

  136. Tushar Says:

    Good Job Maruti…Aur sikhao inhe…

  137. Amogh Kale Says:

haha..yet another instance of so called’ Maharashtrians having little respect or regard for the history of Maharashtra!! Thousands of crores is being wasted in million other ways in India everyday. Why doesnt Vishal Dadlani run a campaign against corruption and he can collect much more than 350 crores!!
Shivaji Maharaj is a symbol of Maharashtra and I fully support the installation of the statue. It will be a delightful sight to see our Great Maratha warrior stand in the middle of the ocean and I believe this will also create awareness of an important part of Maharashtra’s history to the millions of visitors of Mumbai who will visit the statue.
This is just an appalling stunt by Mr Dadlani to gain ‘cheap’ publicity and it will be a great shame if Maharashtrians fall for it.

  138. winz Says:

    Hi,
I am totally with Vishal… With all due respect to what Shivaji… the statue is just a total waste of our money. The govt shud rather use this money for the upbringing of the poor / upgrading the Police facilities and infrastructure or for the development of the state.
No one can forget history and what great people have done for our state and our country… but that does not mean that one shud use the money of the common man to build statues and monuments which is of no importance or value to anyone

  139. Hitesh Says:

Ramit …Kudos …to bring enlightment to this dumbo…

And Maruti ..that is an eye opener .. Apart From Maharashtra ..the Brave Kings Were From Punjab and Rajasthan , Baki there were none …

Vishal ..Again , Your Petition will be used as TOILET PAPER for sure ….

  140. Hitesh Says:

By The Way , both Those in Favor and Those Against …dnt waste your time on this petition , as govt of india does not approve any online petition and this Fellow , with his dumb looking website is just here to make a quick publicity , as there were enough causes to oppose prior to this …and he did not stand up for any ….Sucker.

  141. swapnil Says:

I think about Rs 300-400 coror are too much at this time —for Smarak.
    I am not opposing ShivajiRaje’s smarak…it should be. BUT…
I don’t know exact figure of estimate but say it is Rs400 Caror. But there will be about more than 10 lac(still more ) per year expenditure for its maintenance and “security” at place.
ALSO THIS WILL BE BUILT ON WATER BY CREATING ARTIFICIAL ISLAND…..AND MORE HEIGHTED THAN STATUE OF LIBERTY….IS IT REALLY NEEDED?
STATUE OF LIBERTY IS ON LAND…….IS ANYONE THAUGHT ABOUT POLLUTION DUE TO IT? ALSO WE ARE NOT ABLE TO MANAGE RAIN-WATER IN MUMBAI CITY AND HOW WE CAN DO THIS.
SO THERE SHOULD BE PETITION AGAINST IT WHICH WILL SAY—
THIS MEMORIAL CAN BE BUILT BUT AFTER AT LEAST 2 OF FOLLOWING PROBLEMS MUST BE SOLVED BEFORE THAT-
    1. BETTER(NOT SAYING BEST), EDUCATION FOR ALL ESP PRIMARY AND TILL GRADUATION.
    2. NO CHILD LABOR, ABUSE, NO FARMER’S SUICIDE OR GOOD RATE FOR THEIR PRODUCTS
    3. QUALITY SERVICES(HOME ,SALARY, LEAVES) FOR POLICE AND SUCH DEPTS.
    4. GOOD HEALTH PLAN –GOOD GOVT HOSPITALS WHICH ARE FREE FROM CORRUPTION.
    5. VERY GOOD INDUSTRIAL AND AGRICULTURE GROWTH
WHAT DO U THINK ..CAN ANYONE WILL DO THIS FOR ME!!
