I live in Scotland. I have followed the entire series of events by watching CNN IBN and NDTV over the internet. There were many times when I wondered if it was right to show certain material that they were broadcasting. Also, the way they make montages and stylish graphics with the footage of the departed, was so upsetting. We need to bring some kind of stringent regulations to the news channels.

I wud like to differ a bit abt the media actions. i saw the repeated telecast of mumbai attacks and i felt tht few news channels acted responsibily while other jus wanted to exaggarate and make the masala out of it showing the position of commandos and their areas of strike. moreover wht is to be seen the role of politicians during the whole handling the situation. every person round the world is calling it a failure of Indian administration, security and political system. At this moment the government is also trying to save its face by saying all the time tht pakistan is involved wht can we do. more frm the recent reports it has come clear tht there were intelligence reports regarding this attack 1st one in october by US intelligence and the other one on 19th november by coast guards but the government or the system failed to take any substantial action . Fishermen on bombay shores also hv said tht they hv informed abt the trafficking of RDX at shores which was also neglected. so conclusion is that its not only media for its irresponsible act is inthe line of fire but also the complete Indian administration system shud be brought in the line of fire Moreover our commandos who hv done such a fabulous job should be more trained and well equipped to handle these situations.

I\'m glad my own doubts have been shared by so many. The most amusing aspect of the whole tragic event was how the channels kept harping on how not to please politicise the tragedy, whereas the channels couldn\'t resist saying \" it\'s a times now exclusive\" or a \" ndtv exclusive\". Surely if they were that sensitive they could have avoided taking credit in the midst of such grave disasters ! And then, of course, waiting to catch the crying relatives was particularly insensitive during extreme duress !

I am with Vishal on this, there has to be a way to keep these people off from giving out such sensitive details of the whole operation. The media too has to be blame to a great extent in making life difficult for our jawans who were trying to finish the whole operation asap but due to the information the media was airing, our forses had to face such problems and so many people and Jawans lost their life. Who will pay for this? It\'s high time the channels stop thinking of raising their TRP and being so insensitive. PLEASE STOP THIS IMMEDIATELY. WE CAN\'T TAKE THIS ANYMORE.......

Coming from an army background, wherein my father also served in the NSG only a few years back, the way this operation was handled was very disheartening. Not that I know too much about what should be done and what shouldn\'t, but these are questions we all feel need to be answered. Not only that, the crowd control, which was hardly any really shook some of us who were glued to our television sets. These events in the recent past left us with a sense of dejection. Now, it\'s pure animosity. Yet the helplessness seems to prevail.

As someone from the media, and the daughter of a military general, it was shocking to see the kind of irresponsible reporting that came out of India. The insinuations, the melodrama has not only destroyed its credibility(Barka Dutt what the hell were you and your counterparts thinking) but I see a lot of hurt in the common citizens in Pakistan who I have been interviewing at the attempts to sabotage a positive relationship that they have been looking forward to in the recent present. Thank God, that the Indians I have interviewed from different walks of life, understand they have to clean their own house first. Mumbai where I walked at night at 2 a.m a few years ago and never felt unsafe as a woman, is a place no one can guarantee a safe return any more for anyone. Its time for everyone to be the change they want to see in this city. And its time the media stopped looking at TRPs.

The Media We all know and saw what happened. I have been flipping a lot of news channels over these days. Apart from the tragedy I am also very angry and irritated at the coverage by the news channels. It was evident that all channels wanted to out-do each other in this race by showing the most upto date and latest reports. In their excitement they were aiding the terrorists by giving out the latest positions and proposed actions of the commandos. These actions by the news channels make them partly responsible for the death of many. To point out a few things: 1. These news channels seem to have forgotten that they are supposed to “REPORT” the news. Fair, honest, unbiased “REPORTING.” They are not in the business of entertainment. 2. What we have seen over the days is the way this tragic incident was dramatised by all channels and the degree of dramatisation was much higher in the non English channels. This sensationalisation and dramatisation of news should stop immediately. 3. Today (30-11-08) Live India was showing in a very dramatic and sensational manner how a terrorist wants to marry Bipasha and that Amitabh and Dhoni want a gun. These issues are totally unrelated. They have not informed who this terrorist was and whether it had anything to do with this incident. Amitabh and Dhoni have applied for the gun licenses before this incident then why “REPORT” them now and especially in a manner and way linking them to the incident. Anyways, this was also absolutely not relevant. 4. On 27-11-08 Headlines Today was showing a clip of the events in the past hours which alongwith the music was more like a promo of an action film. It was really pathetic and in bad taste. There are many more incidents which everyone has seen. It is now necessary that the media take its role seriously and try to do something good. My suggestions: 1. To show a few clippings of this horrid incident daily so that we citizens do not develop amnesia and forget the anger that is there within us now. 2. Follow up with the politicians and the people in power who have promised a lot of action following these incidents. 3. To get and “REPORT” the list of action / plan proposed by them along with the time schedule to ensure our safety and avoid repetition of such incidents. 4. Thereafter report on the action taken on such plans. 5. It is yet a few months to elections. The above follow-up may force them into action necessary in this situation.

Vishal, I beg to differ on 1st point. Immediately after the marcos and NSG commandos arrived, the satellite broadcasting in those buildings was disabled. They also wanted to jam the mobile networks but didnt do it as many hostages were continously contacting their relatives through Sms. Infact during the night the electricity was also shut down and the commandos were doing everything through infrared night vision and i believe even the terrorist had it otherwise they wouldnt have survived through the night. I hope I answered few of your queries and shortened your frustration. I believe Indian media though stupid at times (except NDTV) did pretty Ok this time. Infact when the Police Chief ordered Cable networks to blank out media channels on 3rd day people started to panic that something big has happened. Its always necessary to keep people updated in such War-like situation otherwise more fear and insecurity grips them.

The petition should be considered seriously.media should not hype things for their trp rating\'s, they just helped terrorists indirectly ....i also like to mention about news channels- how they are exploiting personal lives of girls n women when they had been raped are sexually harassed,i felt bad after watching a 14 year victim again and again who had been raped by her own relations.....That was really ridiculous about that channel showing her face repeatedly and a illustrating fake video describing how she had been raped...its really unfair in making money by doing things like this..human rights should also consider about these media\'s mistakes.

vishal i agree with you, i was thinking about this too... we were not the only one watching news channels, terrorist must havae watched this too! i heard that at the taj a few guests were transmitted to the fourth flour, but one guest managed it to escape. as soon as he came outside the media jumped on him with several questions like how he experienced everything. he toldd the staff took him and others to a safe place on the 4th flour. the terrorist were hearing this too, and as soon as they knew about this, terrorist rushed to the 4th flour and began shooting there all around! this is just horriblee, because in this way terrorist can know a lot of information such as what the position is of commando\'s and police in the future the media should be limited in what they broadcast on tv!

I agree that the operation should have been classified. One of the top knotch journalists was also criticized similarly when her channel compromised Indian Army\'s positions during Kargil War. I think after the Black Cats landed on Nariman house, channels (at least CNN-IBN) stopped the live feed.

This is the reason why we are unable to tackle terrorism including other issues. Media is blaming politicians but not bothered that they are themselves helping terrorists. Well, the Home Minister himself informed the media about the arrival of NSG and alerted the terrorists who were watching live telecasts on TV.

Very True Vishal to gain better TRP and Viewership these TV Channels forgot that they were endangering the lives of the hostages and the NSG & Marcos Commandos who were fighting their life out to save many of us. I felt disgusted when there were shots fired from Police Jeep which was highjacked I saw a correspondent saying on National television \"These are live images and to bring them first is XXX TV\". What are we doing running for milage & extra viewership when the whole Country is bleeding.. Its a shame on the MEDIA and Us as well as we even tolerate this.

I agree with this petition totally. I feel that there should always be a line drawn for any kind of freedom..We can\'t misuse the freedom bestowed on us by the sacrifices made by so many people. If we cant do good at least we should try to avoid doing bad. It was so sad to see our forces giving their precious lives for our protection and at the same time media revealing each and every move of them. Indeed an irony and mock of democracy!!..When i saw Mumbai meri jaan, i thought its such a good movie to teach the media a sense of responsibility and humanity. Which world are we living in?. Are we so materialistic that we fail to hear the cries of our own species, that we fail to empathize?. Indeed a sad thing. Its high time we do something about it and make our future generation feel secured to live in this world which ones upon a time depicted love, peace and harmony. I whole heartedly sign this petition and hope that our media realizes its limits and boundaries before its too late. Jai Hind!

I had almost similar thoughts all along. Digressing from the present scenario i would also like to point out that media seem to have forgotten the effect they have in society-they are playing a havoc with the minds of young children-i cannot forget the coverage given to Arushi murder case not so long back - its their duty to report but they seem to forget their responsibility -every privledge comes with some responsibilities-they have been enjoying the freedom of press without deserving it in any way

News channels should be only news channels, they can\'t upgrade them self to a entertainment channel.. any news shown nowadays is hammered so many times in different ways with unwanted dialogs and useless scenes, you lose interest in watching the imp part of it.. whatever the media portrayed on television was not needed, if they wanted to cover they could have done it from distance and not spoken about how the cops and army were planning to get in and save hostages and attack.. all the best Vishal..
