We have tremendous admiration for Chatrapati Shivaji. One shudders to think what would have happened to the deccan plateu of this country if he was not born. But yet, there are better ways to remember Shivaji than to erect this statue- and the money being spent on statues in a few states of this coutry can be utilised to provide two square meals a day to poor and the farmers of Maharashtra who are committing suicides at regular intervals.

It also seems as if we are trying to copy the Statue of Liberty!

Please do not waste hard earned tax payers money without asking them

I\'m against the statue from an environmental,aesthetic and financial point of view. Nothing against Shivaji. How about building a hospital or school to commemorate him instead?

Would this be passed if it was done by a private consortium who would then raise funds for it and have to make sure that they made it a self funding entity instead of taking hard earned money from taxpayers. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was a great ruler and he deserves all the honour one can bestow on him. Accordingly I do not see anything wrong in erecting a statue in his honour.What is unjustified however is the proposed use of public money from the exchequer of Maharashtra State for this puropose. One must instead collect voluntary donations from the public for such a purpose. I am sue there will be a spontaneous and massive response from the public. Let the money from the exchequer be used for providing security to our children from the terroristswho seem hell-bent on destroying our country. Let us also use the Exchequer money to better the lot of farmers in Maharashtra who are committing suicide in large numbers due to the unprecedented drought.

Let us stop this drama in the name of a towering personality like Shivaji. The personality is towering enough and does not need any statue or other monuments from a bunch of politicians who do not even know where Shivaji died.

Bombay is a cosmopolitan city - so we should maintain this status unless other cities or places where the locals dominate. No roads, no water, no public transport, no money (state government does not have money to fund infrastructure projects). People have to drink dirty water, travel packed like cattle in outdated trains and buses, walk on roads because there are no pavements. And our wise political leaders want to spend money constructing a statue! Some of the suggestions such as building a hospital or a school with the money are excellent. As also is the one that the politicians shell out part of the cost from their personal treasuries. The priority is development of the state and development is not about statues, it starts at the grass root level. Spend the money on education, welfare, food, please don\'t waste it like this.

I read somewhere, that the Sea Link to Nariman Point will not be allowed due to this Statue. If this is a fact, this statue should be allowed under any circumstances. Mumbai\'s traffic problems need super urgent attention. Apart from this, I do not see any harm in the statue being built as the way it has been designed, it will be a tourist attraction and may recover the cost within a reasonable period. Also, I wonder why it is not being thought of on the Gateway of India side? Infrastructure like Ferries are already in place there.

I\'m an NRI from the UK and even I can see that this is a total and utter waste of money. There are other, more cost effective ways to commerate the historic Kings of India. One of the most valuable ways is to ensure that their name lives on through the education of their exploits to the future of India, the Children. This money could be well spent on dealing with more immediate issues that have been continuously mentioned by others that have signed this petition. This is something that would not happen in the west under the current economic climate.

It is high time that the Judiciary and the Government of India brought out a code and guidelines for building such statues at the cost of taxpayers money. I believe that Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was a great patriot, but the present persons ruling the state are almost all hooligans, nothing great about them. I am an ardent fan of Shivaji Maharaj and i\'m sure he would have been horrified if he knew of these outrageous plans particularly when there are so many other issues on which this money could be well spent. Shivaji always stood for the downtrodden. he would not have erected even Jijabai\'s statue were he faced with a situation as exists in Maharashtra today.i.e drought, farmers\' suicides, children dying due to mal nutirtion etc etc etc.

Its just a waste of money. Same will be recovered from us in some other way. First improve the condition of public transport. See the local train compartments, , cobwebs are hanging from the fan. These people should think of spending some money on cleaning these trains first. Please increase local trains. Please see how working people are travelling every day. Think of helping them by increasing trains, tracks. Spend some money on such project. Check the drainage system on tracks. there are so many statues of Shivaji maharaj all over Maharashtra, nearly in every city; anybody and everybody in Maharashtra knows what a great ruler he was; so to spend 350 crores on one more statue will be a colossal waste of valuable funds which the revenue deficit maharashtra government could use constructively for citizen welfare activities

This is merely a pre-poll gimmick alongwith increasing the SRA cut-off date to 2000. Today it is easier for a slum dweller to own a house worth lacs of Rupees than a hard working person to own one. There are so many issues that needs to be solved primarily health care, infrastructure & drinking water - why cant the government make desalination plant to solve drinking water problem and instead spend hundred of crores on monuments is beyong any understanding...

The Airport Is names After Him, The largest park is named after him.. As mentioned above there are further more priority areas that need attention. i think this is very foolish investment! instead of investing in a huge statue, that money can be used for maintainance of Raja\'s all forts! The S.C has stayed work on Mayawatis Memorial/statue bulding spree in response to a PIL. Shouldnt Mumbaikars follow the PIL Route? It’s a great Idea of making statue in ocean.. but not without considering any practical study or project feasibility. One can’t state that “the statue will be bigger that statue of Liberty just by 3 inches”. It’s really not make any sense. And then what about horse? Imaging what will be length of that horse if Shivaji’s ht. is so big. Else put this money for good course. I personally think its just a political stunt nothing else.

In fact my Utopian vision for Mumbai would be a place where I could drive down Chhatrapati Shivaji Road, go around Chhatrapati Shivaji island, along Chhatrapati Shivaji Drive, past Chhatrapati Shivaji High School to Chhatrapati Shivaji stadium...after which, if I choke, I will have the good fortune to be treated in Chhatrapati Shivaji hospital and be surrounded by people who no doubt studied in the aforementioned Chhatrapati Shivaji High School and Medical College. Pure Bliss!!! Reading this, one may get the impression that I am being less than reverent about Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and a harsh person would condemn me to a life where my only friends were people who travelled on streets and studied at institutions named after other eminent Maharashtrians like Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Gopal Krishna Gokhale, Nanasaheb Talegaonkar, Dadabhai Naoroji, Mahadev Govind Ranade, Joseph Baptista, Mahatma Jyotiba Phule, Maharshi Dhondo Keshav Karve etc ( the list is by no means comprehensive and it might be best if you did your own research so that you don’t get caught out associating with the wrong sort of Maharashtrian!. FYI- While most of the above grandees were linked to the freedom struggle, the last two were pioneers of women’s education and women’s rights, even before it became fashionable in Britain...what could they have been thinking of? ) No. Chhatrapati Shivaji it must be. I don\'t know whether politicians want to give Mumbai a \'Statue-of-liberty\' of its own but perhaps they are forgetting that the Statue of Liberty was gifted to USA by France. So I think they should just wait for some of our allies to gift it to us. Till then and even after, us taxpayer\'s money should be used towards more critical issues of the people, rightly enlisted by Vishal. THIS STATUE SHOULD BE DISALLOWED.

We strongly support and agree with this petition. It is the need of the hour that these questions be raised in these difficult times. It is appalling if indeed no debate or discussion was held in Legislature before prioritising these spends. If they did, we are disappointed that none of the MLAs we have voted into power have made a rational decision to spend this on urgent packages to Vidharbha, etc. We the people have to resort to these means to oppose these irrational decisions. We could build a quarter of a Sea Link with this money or according to the original estimate - the entire Sea Link!

As a Mumbaikar I completely agree. We are the ones who faces tax cuts every month on our hard earned money. The government should be spending our money on meaningful causes and not just an expensive monument.

This is too much expenditure for a cause which is not a priority. I pesonally think (in all due respect to Shivaji Mahraj) that using historical figures to \'create\' a \'nationalistic pride\' within the population insofar as it can distort secular and rational spirit amoung human beings is dangerous. Idolising is a common practise amoungst us Indians and we need to question how much of the values of those we idolise are really practised. In my opinion alot of energy is spent on \'showing\' rather than imbibing the essence and spirit of those we admire. Secondly, infrastructure wise this is an unwise decision, as it has been pointed out.Bombay has been an epitome of secular living and allowing this move is succumbing to the underlying political agenda which goes against the spirit of the community.

This is ridiculous. Therefore as a concerned citizen of Bombay I would like to sign the petition.

A regular statue is fine. Rs 350 crores spent on a single statue is not.

But then a World-class Memorial & Cultural center would be befitting for one of world\'s most well known cities. What i propose is that the Memorial, Statue & Cultural center be built not by using Tax-Payers money but by PRIVATE DONATIONS (the way it is done in western countries). The statue is but one case of excess. All government spending must be scrutinised and facts and figures including awarding of contracts must be open to scrutiny by the people.

I cannot believe this shit? There farmers committing suicides in Vidharbha. Children dying of starvation. There is water, lights, food and homes needed in villages. There are schools and hospital to be made. Pensions for old people who arent being paid for years and years. That money should go to the families of war heroes. That money should go the developement of the country. Not to a statue, where the pigeons are going to sit and do their thing..

I honestly feel India can use that money in more relevant areas in buliding a better economy for its citizens. I agree that it is unnecessary expence,government should imrove the roads and get the road side construction penging work rapidly so that people will not get stuck at the traffic in pick hours.And what ever we are building new roads or pavement blocks etc should be good enough to be sustain for better result than the nusience, we have more bumps than before due to pavment blocks.Kinldy improve on the same.

I have high regards for Shivaji Maharaj who always fought for the cause of Swarajya for his fellowmen.He wanted to free the nation from the atrocities of Mugals.The best thing we can do to honour this great statesman would be to spend the same amount of money (which is envisaged for the statue ) for fighting the drought situtation in Maharashtra .The government should think of constructing dams,canals,provide irrigation facilities ,wavier of loans to name a few steps.

Please lets use our limited financial resources more judiciously.

There are many things to be developed in mumbai rather then making some statue in middle of sea and wasting money time and labour. we f****n pay all those taxes not so these ministers can make gain vote bank from regional uneducated people.
